I’ve been keeping it kind of private (as far as I know, only close online friends and those a member of Skyefairy.net’s Facebook group (haha! related pluggage!) know) but I’ve been working on coding a downloadable script/program/cms thingamajiggerbob for artblogs. I’m about halfway done and I’ve been considering options and would like some feedback. To be honest, I know it doesn’t completely fit with FaeDubh but I figured I might get more feedback here than on Ealain.
So, I have some questions related to the script that will help me work out some of the details that will help me determine how it is when it is finally put up.
- Would you have use of an artblog script? (if no, pretend you do for the other questions)
- Would you prefer a databased program or flat-file (it is managed just as easily for you but the program creates files on your system for storage rather than saving it in a database)? Why?
- What level of understanding are you with php?
- basic: no knowledge or very little
- medium: you know more than just php includes
- high: I don’t need your script, I can make my own
- Would you need a CMS or would you be ok with having the frontend files and inserting your stuff into the database directly (not for flatfile)?
- Anything else you’d like to say
To be honest, I’ve got the frontend done and I have one friend already testing it out. Frontend will display artwork all together or sorted by category. It also has the blog aspect on main page. On viewer page for each individual artwork, it has the ability for viewers to post comments (you can also turn comments off) with secret-spam-word protection. Most of this is like SF when you view (except I currently don’t have comments there; see contact form for the secret-spam-word aspect.)

That might come in handy a lot. Good idea.
1) Sure. Why not? I always love new blogging script to try.
2) For me it really doesn’t matter. But I really prefer flat-file. MySQL is easy for me, but I rather not do it.
3) Medium
4) Again, for me it doesn’t matter. But I’d prefer a CMS.
5) I think I’d be a great idea for organizing art on your website and for blogging. I’m pretty sure this script will get around for portfolios and things like that. I also like the idea of spam protection and commenting on art. Good luck, and sorry if my feedback was a little crappy lol. I’d be happy to test it and use it.

(Firefox froze when I was typing! Now I have to retype again…
)
1) Umm, no. Don’t have an artblog.

2) Database. This probably isn’t true but my feeling counts! My feeling tells me that flat-files seem easier to hack into and manipulate… And also, being clumsy as I am, it’s very possible that I would accidentally upload the wrong file and override the online flat-file with the blank version on my computer. And then… You know what happens.
3) High enough, I think.
4) CMS. There are often times you would have to insert data into more than one table at the same time. CMS saves more than double-time.
5) Good luck working on the script. You might also like to implement a file uploader if you don’t already have that in mind. It looks great on Entula so far.

Oh great. I just found new bugs in my template… Damn smilies.

1. Don’t have an artblog (:
2. I prefer MySQL database over flat file, just that it seems to me more organized (: And databasing is my friend XD
3. Medium level understanding.
4. I prefer CMS. I don’t like manually inserting data, although I still do it.
Hope that helped!

Oh! So you finally got the fronted done XD
1) Yes I would - I would use it for Rainear or something
2) Databased if possible, flat-file is okay. It feels simpler.
3) Basic at best haha…. >.>
4) CMS. Inserting data manually has a lot of liabilities, especially if I do it, I do it haphazardly.

first off i think an artblog would be amazing. if i hadn’t promised myself i would never make another website ever, i would use it. and the fact i already have a portfolio. but having an artblog would be quite amazing!
i’m a database person myself- flat files aren’t as secure and they’re more prone to just *kapoof*-ing. it happens quite a bit to me actually, the flat file just feels like exploding.
my skills with PHP i would say are low-to-medium.
CMS is quite nice. if i had to do it manually i’d probably blow up the entire site.

1. I already have one
2. I’m forced to use files when I don’t have database access, and I wouldn’t recommend it, it’s not worth the hassle. Not to mention SQL has built-in sort and search functions.
3.
4. I prefer CMS because I want to be able to edit my site from anywhere with minimum inconvenience.
5. - Consult Jem about security. Once you make the script public, it’s open for exploits.
- Don’t assume the user always knows what he’s doing. Check every entry and ask confirmation for every action.

1. YES! I definitely would love an artblog script!
2. flat files would be convenient for those who (like me) don’t have easy access to databasing/lack knowledge
3. Basic-Medium (but learning!)
4. CMS is good, easier updating.
5. I’ve been looking for a good artblog script, I really hope this turns out great for you! Good luck

Yes, I am … thirteen days late with this, and something tells me I’d be better off emailing or Facebooking you rather than commenting vaguely, but here goes:
1. You know I love you. *hug* Artblog script, yes’m.
2. Databased. Although I wouldn’t mind either way.
3. Medium. Low Medium; PHP includes are a life-saver, but I also dabbled in a bit of it for the good ol’ Wordpress themes. Don’t expect me to whip up a page, though.
4. CMS. It’d be like visual Wordpress. Squee.
5. Well, I’d love an artblog script.
It’d provide a nice opportunity to mix Photoshop work with random amateur photography with heinously bad drawings. Best of luck! *hug*
